Formula Flashcards
(11 cards)
THE FORMULA (IMPORTANT)…
Bodyweight (kg) x Dose Rate (mg/kg)
divided by Concentration of Drug (mg/ml or mg)
EXAMPLE…
A 5kg cat requires an injectable dose of Metacam. The dose rate is 0.2mg/kg and the concentration is 2mg/ml
Bodyweight x Dose Rate divided by Concentration of Drug =
5kg x 0.2mg/kg divided by 2mg/ml =
Answer= 0.5l
EXAMPLE FOR TABLET CALCULATIONS…
A 15kg dog requires Carprofen tablets. The dose rate is 2mg/kg and the concentration is 50mg
Your answer should be rounded to the nearest ½ tablet
Bodyweight x Dose Rate divided by Concentration of Drug
15kg x 2mg/kg divided by 50mg =
Answer = 0.6 tablets rounded to 0.5 tablets
What does BID means?
Twice a day
What does SID means?
Once a day
What does TID means?
Three times a day
Example of BID calculation…
Sum- 5 x 20 = 100
100 divides by 50= 2
2 x 2= 4
4 x 7 = 28 tablets
Example of SID calculation…
1.5 x 8 = 12
12 divided by 16 = 0.75
0.75 x 2 = 1.5 - 2 tablets
Example of TID calculation…
Sum - 5 x 20 = 100
100 divided by 50 = 2
2 x 3 = 6
6 x 7 = 42 tablets
Example of a % conversion…
Convert 1.87% into mg/ml =
1.87 x 10 = 18.7mg/ml
750ml x 0.2mg/kg divided by 18.7mg/ml
Answer = 8ml
Example of sachets calculation…
Sparky weighs 11kg and requires Bisolvon, the dose rate is 2mg/kg and the sachet concentration is 10mg/sachet. The patient requires a 5 day course BID
Bodyweight x Dose Rate divided by Concentration of Drug
11 x 2 divided by 10 = 2 sachets
2 x 5 = 10 x 2 = 20
Answer = 20 sachets
