What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
Central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (nerves branching from the brain and spinal cord to the body).
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The nerves that branch from the brain and spinal cord to the body.
What are the two divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
Somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system.
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Carries messages from the central nervous system to the skeletal muscles.
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Carries messages to the glands and visceral organs (heart, stomach, and intestines).
Is the autonomic nervous system consciously controlled?
No, it is not consciously controlled and does not require awareness or intentional control.
What essential body functions does the autonomic nervous system regulate?
Heartbeat, breathing, digestion, sweating, and sexual arousal.
What role does the autonomic nervous system play in emotion?
It is activated during emotional states and can influence physical symptoms.
What physical symptoms might occur when a person feels anxious due to the autonomic nervous system?
Stomachache, diarrhea, a pounding heart, or a headache.
How can prolonged emotional stimulation affect the body?
It can adversely affect the health of organs controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Prepares the body to respond to psychological or physical stress.
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Promotes bodily maintenance, energy conservation, and storage under non-stressful conditions.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the pupils?
Dilates the pupils.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to salivation?
Inhibits salivation.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the heart rate?
Increases heart rate.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the bronchi?
Dilates the bronchi.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the digestive tract?
Inhibits the digestive tract.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to sugar levels?
Releases sugar.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to epinephrine secretion?
Increases epinephrine secretion.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to the urinary bladder?
Inhibits contraction of the urinary bladder.
What does the sympathetic nervous system do to blood flow and muscle tension?
Increases blood flow and muscle tension in large muscles.
