Q

what does the story ‘Healing the Legion’ show about Jesus and his mission

A
  • The miracles that Jesus did sometimes made people afraid
  • They wondered where Jesus could possibly have received his power from and some may have wondered whether or not it was sinister.
  • Jesus, however, showed with the healing of the legion that he was there to fight evil and bring people to faith in God.
  • Jesus wanted to convert people to become his followers with his miracles and for them to spread the word of God

Q

why was ‘Jesus heals and forgives the paralyzed man’ a significant story in Jesus’ ministry

A
  • It shows how news of Jesus has spread and many people want to hear him teach and see his miracles.
  • Jesus shows that he has come to forgive sins by the power of God and the Jewish teachers are suspicious of this and accuse him of blasphemy (this is an offence he is trialed with in court before his crucifixion).
  • Jesus shows that he has divine power through healing a person of a physical illness.
  • By forgiving the man’s sins first, this shows that the forgiveness of sins and spiritual life is more important than physical needs

Q

Q - ‘Christian discipleship is all about unquestioning faith and obedience’. Do you agree?

A

Disagree:
- This is not the case because even St Peter, who went onto become the leader of the Church, denied that he knew Jesus three times when Jesus was arrested.
- Also, Thomas who was one of Jesus disciples did not believe that the other disciples had seen the resurrected Jesus after he died and only believed when he could touch the wounds of the risen Jesus.
Agree:
- Jesus disciples had to leave their old lives behind in complete faith and obedience to Jesus.
- Jesus himself said that in order to be a disciple you have to ‘deny themselves and take up their cross andfollowme’.

Q

Events leading up to the death of Jesus

A
  • Before Jesus was arrested he celebrated the Last Supper with the disciples where he predicted that one of the disciples would betray him. He also took the bread saying “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me” and the wine saying, ‘this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins’.
  • After the Last Supper Jesus and the disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed to God, knowing what was to come. ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.’ The disciples were meant to be on watch, but fell asleep. Judas betrayed Jesus to the Pharisees who sent soldiers to arrest Jesus.
  • Jesus was put on trial and questioned by the Pharisees who accused him of blasphemy, meaning an offence against God, because he called himself the Son of God.
  • Jesus was also questioned by the Pontius Pilate who was worried Jesus might pose a threat to the established order of the Roman rule. Ultimately, however, he let the crowd decide to release another prisoner called Barabbus and Jesus was crucified.

Q

The crucifixion and death of Jesus

A

39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[a]”
43Jesus answered him,“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
