Americas letter telling England that we were starting our own country.

Governments were created to protect natural rights, if they don’t, people can create a new government(enlightenment idea).

The right to rule.
Popular Sovereignty
The right to rule comes from the people.
Grievance
A reason for a complaint.
Northwest Ordinance
A document created to govern the Northwest territory. Established several precedents for the US. Constitution.
Territory
A piece of land that is controlled by the US., but is not a state.
Northwest Territory
a big piece of land that the US. acquired after the revolution. EX: are Ohio,Illinois, and Michigan.
Bill of Rights
list of protection from the government written into the US. Constitution. First 10 amendments to the US. Constitution.
Amendment
Change to a written document. There are 27 of them in the US. Constitution.
13th Amendment
Ended slavery.

List of cans and can not do for the government.
Democracy
Government run by the people. Based on majority rule.
Republic
Democracy where elected officials make decisions based on behalf of the people.
Republicanism
Representative democracy. Form of government the US. has.
Monarchy
Government run by king or queen.
Articles of the Confederation
America’s first constitution. Failed because the federal government was to weak.
Provision
A condition or requirement in a legal document.
Legislate
To make laws.
Federal Government
National Government(over entire country).
Federalism
National and state government share powers.
Federalists
Did not want the Bill of Rights but wanted the US. Constitution.
