Geneva, Switzerland
This is where Victor grew and lived until he was 17 years old, where most of the people important to him died (Elizabeth, his mother, his father, and his little brother William), this is also where he gets married to Elizabeth before she is murdered. Most of the time when death happens Victor isn’t in Geneva to witness it, and it’s scattered throughout the book, so to say, it’s scattered throughout the years of the late 1700’s
Ingolstadt, Bavaria (Germany)
This is where Victor goes to study “natural sciences” that turn out to be old wive tails. This is where Victor discovers the secret to reanimating dead body parts, and brings the creature to life. The creature escapes from the school and goes off, while Victor falls ill from realizing what he’s done
St. Petersburg, Russia
This is where the book starts with Robert Walton writing to his sister about his journey to the north pole, and how he needs to get to Archangel to hire some more people to go with him to the north pole.
Scotland (focused on Orkney Islands archipelago)
After being persuaded into creating a mate for Victor’s monster, he and Henry travel to Scotland where Victor sends Henry off to create a mate for the monster in hopes that Henry will be safer the further he is from Victor and his creation. Victor tries to create another monster, but is disgusted with himself and destroys it. The monster is enraged and pledges vengence
Unnamed village on the coast of Ireland
As Victor vows to destroys everything related to his creations, he sails out to the middle of a body of water and deposits all of his instruments into the water. After this he falls asleep and drifts to an island on the coast of Ireland where he is greeted rudely and everyone believes he killed the random man that showed up on shore. He discovers that Henry is the one who was murdered and falls severely ill while still on trial for his friends murder. His father comes to visit him and Victor tells him his story, but he doesn’t believe him.
The Alps (near Chamounix-Mont Blanc – along the French/Italian border and reaching into Switzerland)
As Victor tries to find peace in climbing the Chamounix-Mont Blanc, he encounters the creature and hears his story of being abandoned, and finding the cottagers, trying to make friends with the cottagers, being rejected, swearing revenge against Victor/all of mankind, killing William, and framing Justine
North Pole (Arctic Ocean)
The late-beginning and end of the story take place here, this is where Robert finds Frankenstein and where he dies, as well as where Frankenstein chases the monster to before he is too weak to continue. Mostly in the form of letters dated with a month, day and the year 17–, no specific year for any letter
Who tells the story at different times in the book?
The book starts off with letters sent to Walton’s sister, describing what’s going on in his life, once they find Frankenstein he’s still writing to his sister, but he’s telling Frankensteins story. Half way through the book we hear a the creatures life story, we switch back to Walton narrating Victor’s story, then we finish with letters from Walton to his sister about Victor’s death
