Old Regime

an assembly of representatives from all three estates
National Assembly
the Third Estate delegates name themselves the National Assembly and pass laws and reforms in the name of the French people.

a person who has left their own country in order to settle in another (Usually because of war or political issues)

A device to behead people and that killed Marie Antoinette and king Louis XVI

a series of massacres and numerous public executions took place in response to the french revolution.
Napoleon Bonaparte
Former and first emperor of France and helped lead successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars.
Coup d’etat
The overthrow of the government and its powers.
Plebiscite
the members of an electorate on an important public question such as a change in the constitution.
Lycee
a French school for older children, either in France or for French children living in other countries.
Concordat
an agreement between the French state and the Catholic Church that reconciled the Church with the anti-religious policies established during the French Revolution.
Napoleonic Code
made the authority of men over their families stronger, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children.
Battle of Trafalgar
a naval engagement between the British Royal Navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies during the Napoleonic Wars.
Blockade
sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving.
