Why is France in debt
Because they funded the American Revolution and the King keeps spending all of the money on fun parties for himself
Factors that Lead to the French Revolution
- their financial issues
- 3rd estate having to pay all the tax
- agricultural disasters messing up their farms = no food
- 3rd estate getting only one vote out of 3 when they are majority of population
- Age of Enlightenment: writings spreading revolutionary ideas
- king keeps spending money on himself and wars
Who’s stuck paying all the taxes
The third estate has to pay all taxes while the first two estates (nobility and clergy) and the king are completely exempt
Causes of the Revolution: the enlightenment period
- respecting other humans
- humans can be trusted to make decisions
- challenged family lines… More democratic views
- more freedoms

Nobility of the sword (tru nobility)
Nobility of the robe (bourgeoisie that bought their nobility)
Nobility of the sword feels superior to the robes and won’t talk to the robes

Causes of the revolution: France was an absolute monarchy with a weak monarchs
- King Louis XVI preferred personal interests so he spent a lot of money on nothing
- strongly influence by his wife: Marie Antoinette
- not good at decisions
- he was clueless and thought that the citizens of France loved him and believed that they all had a lot of food

The King during the French Revolution his father was crazy and made him become a bad King because his father was dumb and got a bunch of STDS and went crazy
Causes of the French Revolution: financial difficulties
-week long parties: loss of money
-maintenance of the palace of Versailles (25% of budget)
-over ambitious wars (made them lose money)
-7 years war
-American Revolution
France lost territories except two small islands = loss of wealth/resources/agriculture
-need to raise taxes but only the 3rd estate is made to pay the taxes
Why did France want to help with the American Revolution
Because they lost the 7 years war and they hated Britain so they funded their troops to fight for American against Britain and then the troops who went to America learned their revolutionary ideas and came back to France wanting a change as well

Middle class they were workers and educated … They got rich but had no political power they wanted the same rights as the upper classes

What was not fair about the voting
There was no representative assembly
0.5% = 1 vote
1.5% = 1 vote
98% = 1 vote
That makes 2% of the population have majority vote over the 98% of the popation
Ever growing deficit
Spending more than what’s coming in :.. didn’t get enough taxes to help
When is the start of the French Revolution
May 1789 … When the parliament comes together to deal with their financial issues
