3
Q

what is water quality and how can we measure it?

A

 Describes how pure water is

 Can be determined through
measuring amount of substances
besides water in a sample

11
Q

what mostly causes waves?

A

the wind (stronger the wind, bigger the waves)

12
Q

what’s the difference between how waves move and how water moves?

A

Waves move along the surface,
water itself moves in small circles

13
Q

how can shorelines change?

A

 Waves crashing on the shore can
change its shape
 Shore can be eroded or sand and
other materials can be deposited

regularly everyday

15
Q

what causes tides?

A

Caused by the gravitational force of
the moon
 Water feels the largest pull on the side
where the moon is, it bulges (also a
bulge on the opposite side)
 As the Moon moves in it’s orbit, so does
the bulge.

16
Q

what questions are asked to develop a profile on a stream?

A

 How fast does it flow?
 How steep is the channel?
 How is it eroding its banks?

17
Q

what is erosion?

A

wearing away and
transporting of rock fragments
and soil

18
Q

what are sediments?

A

the rock fragments and soil

19
Q

what is deposition?

A

The laying down or
depositing of sediments

20
Q

what are watersheds?

A

All the area of land that drains into
one main lake or river
 Can contain many smaller rivers and
lakes, which eventually drain into a
larger one
 Most finally drain into the ocean

21
Q

what is the continental drift?

A

Continental Divide: Location of the
highest ground, determines the
direction a watershed drains
 The Rocky Mountains in North America

22
Q

what is the lithosphere?

A

the outer part of the earth

Made of rocks that are broken into
huge plates
 Plates move slowly over Earth’s
surface
 Movement shapes the geological
features of ocean floors and the
continents

23
Q

what affects continental drainage systems?

A

Affected by the changing lithosphere
 The Rocky Mountains were formed
by two plates moving towards each
other
 Mountain ranges have shaped
continental drainage systems

24
Q

what are glaciers?

A

large moving bodies of ice

25
what are continental glaciers/icecaps?
Glaciers that cover large areas of land
26
how/where are glaciers formed?
Form high in mountains, snow and ice build up, then it begins to move over land
27
what can glaciers leave behind?
Can leave behind soil, rock, and boulders
28
what are moraines?
build up of rocks and gravel on the side of the glacial path
29
what are eskers?
Formed when a glacier melts.  Melt water forms a path under the ice  Melting releases sand and gravel, deposited in a winding pattern
30
what are drumlins?
small hills with a tear drop shape.  Formed by a glacier moving over previously formed moraines
31
what erratics?
large rocks deposited by glaciers
32
what is climate?
the average weather over a long period of time
33
do large bodies of water influence climate? what happens because of this?
Large bodies of water influence climate  Takes a long time to raise and lower the temperature of water  Prevents extremes in weather in an area  Differences in day and night and summer and winter in Nanaimo are much less than Calgary
34
how do currents affect the climate?
Current could carry warm water from the equator or cold polar water  These currents affect the climates of the shores they flow to
