Q

Key findings

A

The phobia of the white horse was him being fearful of his father because he was experiencing the Oedipus complex

His fascination with his widdler was coz of the Oedipus complex

His daydream about giraffes was a representation of him trying to take his mother away from his father- another feature of the Oedipus complex

Hans father fantasy was linked to the Oedipus complex

The plumber fantasy was him now identifying with his father and signifying the end of the Oedipus complex

Q

Research method

A

+ allows us to see any changes across the life span- can analyse phobias over a period of time

  • didn’t provide an objective strategy for investigation- study was completely subjective (up for interpretation)- no IV
17
Q

Validity

A

+ ecological validity- took place in participants’ home

  • population validity- only 1 participant- Hans may differ to other boys- not refers to all boys
  • construct validity- the Oedipus complex is not found- neither is the unconscious mind
  • the research is deductive- researcher bias may have impacted as Hans father was a fan of freud
  • temporal validity - may have been accurate at the time period but not accurate in the present- big difference in the role of men now
18
Q

Reliability

A
  • could’ve asked for other observations like the mother
  • study cannot be replicated as there’s no set procedure
  • interpretation is done by freud only
19
Q

Sampling bias

A
  • only male
  • only 1 participant

+ studying one individual provides a unique opportunity to observe a child in the phallic stage in the psychosexual stage

20
Q

Ethnocentrism

A
  • study was carried out within the middle class. Early 1900s Vienna.
Only represents that culture- historic time- people around the world are likely to have different experience of family
