What was the Potsdam Conference?
A conference in 17th July - 2nd August 1945 between America, Britain, France and Russia in which Germany and Berlin was divided into 4 sections. The focus was to demilitarising, de-nazifying, decentralising and reunifcation of Germany (this was through the Allied Control Council).
What was the Marshall Plan?
1947 economic plan which gave $13.3 billion to Germany from the US in order to aid the post-war economy; as well as, preventing a steer to communism. Bank of German States was created in the west in order to impliment this plan (broke the agreement for economic unity across Germany)
What did the Basic Law promise?
- Equal rights to all German citizens regardless of race, religion, gender or political views
- Freedom of speech, assembley, unions and no censorship
- A state education, although private education was allowed
What was the Berlin Blockade?
The isolation of Berlin, in June 1947, when the USSR closes all rail. road and canal routes in and out of Berlin in retaliation to introduction of the Deutschemark, June 1947 (a currency only to be used in the west which broke economic unity)
What was the Berlin Airlift?
A respone to the Berlin Blockade starting in June 1948 in which the West flew millions tonnes of resources, effectively saving a dying society. USSR could not respond in order to prevent another outbreak of war. In May 1949, the USSR finally lifted the blockade.
