Chapter 28. “What happens to music when cultures meet? Six stages of Music development in African churches”

Stage 1 importation -where hymn tunes, texts, and rhythms all originate with the Western missionary

Stage 2: adaptation - where imported hymn tunes or texts are in some way “Africanized” by rendering them more suitable or intelligible to worshipers in a given setting

Stage 3 alteration - where some part of the missionary’s hymn (tune, text, or rhythm) is replaced or otherwise significantly modified by an indigenous form

Stage 4: imitation- where tunes, texts, and rhythms are locally composed or performed, but in a style that is inspired by or replicates in some way a western musical genre

Stage 5: indigenization - where tunes, texts, and rhythms are locally produced in indigenous musical forms and styles

Stage 6 internationalization - where tunes, text, and rhythms from the global Faith family beyond both the west and one’s own local context become incorporated into the life and worship of the church

…..
The six stages would be interesting to compare to the seven categories one of Wendy’s cards… international, national, etc.

“Redeeming the Arts”

A

Manual pp on Addressing Opposition/Objections (?)
Teaching biblical passages to understand truths from God about the Arts:
God created man in his own image (Gen 2)
Aesthetic pleasure comes from God (Gen 2)
Humans are culture shapers (Gen 2)
God calls people to artistic communication (Bezalel and Oholiab, Ex 31; calling us as we participate in building the church, Eph 4)
God uses diverse forms of arts for diverse purposes (he used visual art to bring repentance Num 21:1-8; drama to prophesy Ezek 4) and multiple Arts to worship, lament, and still fear, rejoice, repent, teach, celebrate, fight battles, and other purposes.
Diverse expressions please God ( Ps 150 )
Heart and allegiance are more important than the form of artistic communication: God said, “Away with the noise of your songs!” (Amos 5:23,34)
No one should be forced to change the good parts of their culture to worship God. (Acts 15, the Jerusalem council)
