A
The issues in the church went from the top down.

A
Many popes were not very holy men. Some were violent, had mistresses and fathered children.

What was the difference between bishops and priests?
A
Bishops were normally well educated but the ordinary priest was not so. Some of them had very little knowledge of the Bible.
