fronts and severe weather Flashcards
(37 cards)
atmosphere
a thin layer of gases surrounding Earth, gases around the Earth.
atmosphere
Gases in atmosphere =
78% Nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% others
Water vapor =
H20in gases form
layer of atmosphere closest to Earth =
Troposphere
Ozone =
area of the stratosphere with a high concentration, ozone protects us from ultraviolet.
Auroa =
northern lights are caused
radiation =
the transfers of energy by electromagnetic waves
Greenhouse effects =
the trapping of the sun’s warmth in planet’s lower atm. to visible radiation
conduction =
the transfer of energy by collisions between particles of matters
convection =
transfers thermal energy by the movements of matter from one place to another.
Wind =
movement of air to high to low pressure
Coriolis effect =
an effect whereby a mass moving in rotating system experience acting perpendicular to direction of motion and to the axis of rotation
jet stream =
influences weather as it moves cold air from the poles towards the topic equator and warm air from the tropics towards the pole.
weather =
the atmosphere conditions, along with short-term changes, of a certain place at the certain time.
air temp.
measure of how hot or cold is, as gas molecules move quickly, air temperature increases.
sea breeze =
a breeze blowing towards the sea from the land, especially during at night owing relative warmth of the sea
land breeze =
a breeze blowing towards the sea from the land , especially during at night owing relative warmth of the sea.
pressure =
force of perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit area
humidity =
amount of water vapor in the air
clouds/fogs =
a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atm. typically high above the ground. fog is consists of visible cloud water droplets suspended in the air or near the earth’s surface.
High pressure system =
large body of air with high pressure at center + low pressure outside. And it causes rain.
low pressure system =
mass of warm, moist air generally brings stormy weather with strong winds
air masses =
a body of air with horizontally uniform temp. humidity and pressure. maritime Arctic, maritime polar, continental arctic, maritime tropical, continental tropical
front =
boundary separating two masses or air of different densities
