what is zionism?
The belief that the jewish people since they are a nation should have a national home
what are the arab claims over israel?
they have lived there for hundreds of years, the fact that the bible isn’t a valid claim in modern terms ( referring to the jews) and that the arabs shouldn’t have to pay for europes crimes against the jews.
what are the jewish claims over israel?
the biblical promise to abraham, it is the historical site of the jewish kingdom and the jews need a safe haven
What were the obstacles facing zionism?
immigration,ownership of land, palestinian demograhic majority, palestinian nationalism and international opinion

a secret agreement between the british and the french saying they would divide up the land from their potential world war 1 victory (france gets syria and lebanon and england gets Palestine, transjordan and iraq)
what was the balfour declaration?
the british promise to support the zionists need for a national home
what were the three promises made by the british during WWI?
the balfour declaration, the skykes -picot agreement and the mcmahon-hussein correspondance
What happened because of these promises at the end of WWI?
The arabs and the zionists started rioting because the Brits broke their promises to both parties.
what happened at the end of WWI?
there was a shift in power from the ottoman empire to british control, the skykes picot agreement took effect, palestine became a unified political entity and league of nations is created.
what are some causes of the arab rebellion?
the arabs need for independance, they’re fear of a Jewish state and their outrage at the british breaking their promise.
what is the peel commission?
The peel commission is a group charged with finding out the reasons behind all the riots in Israel as well as finding a solution
what is the peel commissions recommended solution?
they recommend a partition but state that there must be a transfer of land and exchange of population for it to work.
what was the woodhead commission?
a white paper restricting the amount of jewish immigration to israel
why was the woodhead commission created?
arab discontent, need for oil and the british were scared that they might ally with germany in the war
what happens as a result of the woodhead commission?
the jews of palestine start to rebel and britain because of the war can’t deal with it like they did for the arab rebellions so they start to lose control and hand over palestine to the UN
what is resolution 181?
the partition plan recommended by UNSCOP to deal with the problems in palestine
what were the reactions to resolution 181?
the zionists accepted the plan despite its limitations and the arabs blatantly refused it and promised to defy the resolution by force
