Fuel Cells Flashcards
(13 cards)
Fuel cells use ____ and ____ to produce ______ ______
Fuel and oxygen Electrical energy
What is a fuel cell?
A fuel cell is an electrical cell that supplied with fuel and oxygen, and uses energy from the reaction between them to produce electrical energy efficiently
When the fuel enters the cell, what happens?
It becomes oxidise and set up a potential difference within the cell
What can hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells be used in?
Vehicles
What is an advantage to fuel cell vehicles?
Fuel cell vehicles don’t producers many pollutants as other fuels. No greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxide sulphur dioxide or carbon monoxide. The only byproducts are water and heat.
What reaction do hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells involve?
Redox reaction
What is the negative electrode called?
Anode
What is the positive electrode called?
Cathode
Is there a reduction at the cathode or the anode?
Cathode
What happens at the cathode?
Reduction
Is that oxidation at the cathode or the anode?
Anode
What happens at the anode?
Reduction
What has to happen for a redox reaction to occur?
Electrons transferred
