Fuels (1) Flashcards
(15 cards)
State one factor that makes a good fuel
- burns easily
Explain how the petrol and bitumen fractions differ in their properties and uses
- petrol has shorter chains
- petrol had lower melting point
- lower viscosity
- petrol ignited more easily
- burning bitumen produces lots of carbon monoxide
- bitumen does not combust completely
uses of petrol:
- fuels in cars and transportation
bitumen uses:
- used for surface of roads
- roofing and flooring
Which of the following describes a correct trend from top of the column to the bottom
B - ease of ignition decreases
Describe problems caused by one product of incomplete combustion
Carbon monoxide formed
- poisonous
explain why some people are concerned about the release of large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
- it is a greenhouse gas
- traps heat in the atmosphere
- may lead to global warming
Fuel oil can contain sulcus as an impurity
explain how burning this impurity can cause problems in the environment
- sulfur reacts with oxygen
- form sulfur dioxide
- sulfur dioxide forms acid rain
- causes damage to building plants and fish in lakes
Describe advantages of replacing fossil fuels with biofuels
- biofuels are renewable whereas fossil fuels are finite
- biofuels produced from plants
- growing plants remove carbon dioxide from environment
- reduces demand for fossil fuels
- biofuels don’t contain impurities like sulfur
There is a danger the water will rise up the delivery tube
state what you would do to prevent this
- remove delivery tube from water before stopping heating
the equation for cracking
in the balanced equation X is?
B - C4H8
state what is meant by unsaturated
- contains a double bond
Propane and Propene are bubbled through separate samples of bromine water
describe what you would see in these tests
- bromine water is orange
- propAne remains orange
- propEne become colourless
long chain hydrocarbon molecules are cracked to form shorter chain hydrocarbon molecules
explain why this is important
- shorter chain molecules are more useful
- demand for shorter ones and cracking helps to meet the demand
explain the difference between non renewable and renewable fuels
Non renewable - fossil fuels, finite supply
Renewable - produced from plants / electrolysis , when used able to replace quickly
Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using bioethanol, instead of petrol as a fuel for cars
Advantages of bioethanol:
- renewable and petrol is finite
- reduces demand of fossil fuels
- carbon dioxide removed from air when growing plants
Disadvantages of bioethanol:
- less readily available than petrol
- lots of crops needed to generate sufficient supply
- less farmland available for growing other crops like food
State a disadvantage of using hydrogen rather than diesel as a fuel for buses
- must be stored in cylinders
- fewer fuel stations
