1
Q

What is crude oil?

A

A mixture of hydrocarbons

2
Q

What is Fractional distillation?

A

Fractional distillation is used to separate crude oil into more useful products

3
Q

What is the order of FD?

A
Gas
Petrol
Naptha
Kerosene
Diesel
Fuel oil
Bitumen
4
Q

What is the acronym to remember the order of FD?

A
Good
People
Never
Kick
Dogs
For
Barking
5
Q

What are hydrocarbons?

A

Hydrocarbons are compounds that only contain hydrogen and carbon atoms

5
Q

What can each hydrocarbon be used for?

A
Gas- cooking, heating
Petrol- fuel for cars
Naptha- lighter fluid
Kerosene- jet fuel
Diesel- fuel for lorries
Fuel oil- fuel for ships, power stations
Bitumen- tar
7
Q

What is a fuel?

A
A fuel is something that can be burned to release heat and light energy
Wood
Oil
Gas
Coal
8
Q

Give three examples of crude oils

A

Crude oil
Natural gas
Coal

9
Q

What hydrocarbons are found in crude oil?

A
Gas
Petrol
Naptha
Kerosene
Diesel
Fuel oil
Bitumen
10
Q

What does non- renewable mean?

A

We can’t make any more, once it’s gone it’s gone

11
Q

What are the 4 Biofuels?

A

Biogas
Wood
Bio ethanol
Bio diesel

12
Q

What are the Pros of Biofuels?

A

Renewable
crops use up carbon dioxide and produce oxygen
when growing /photosynthesising
• carbon neutral because the carbon produced during
combustion is used when growing the plants
• does not use up crude oil/non-renewable resources

13
Q

What are the cons of biofuels?

A

crops grown for bio-fuels use up land
• land could otherwise be used to provide homes / less
farmland available for growing food crops
• lots of crops required to provide a small amount of
bio-methane
• bad season reduces availability
• carbon emissions due to transport and production if
qualified

14
Q

What does carbon neutral mean?

A

The same amount of carbon dioxide is given out as taken in

15
Q

What makes a good fuel?

A
Renewable
Can ignite easily
Flammable
Doesn't produce too much soot, burns cleanly
High energy output
Doesn't produce toxic gases
Carbon neutral
16
Q

As you go down in the Fractions what happens to the boiling points?

A

They get higher as you go down

17
Q

As you go down in the Fractions what happens to the viscosity?

A

The viscosity increases

18
Q

As you go down in the Fractions what happens to the molecule size?

A

They get bigger

19
Q

As you go down in the Fractions what happens to the ease of ignition?

A

It decreases

20
Q

What are the advantages of using hydrogen as a fuel?

A

Only emits water, extremely environmentally friendly.
Very efficient
Doesn’t contribute to global warming

21
Q

What are the disadvantages of using hydrogen as a fuel

A

Few filling stations sell hydrogen
Hydrogen fuel cells do not work at low temperatures
Atmospheric pollution may be generated during the production of hydrogen

22
Q

Write the balanced equation for the overall reaction that takes place when the
hydrogen reacts with oxygen in the fuel cell.

A

2H2 + 02 -> 2H2O
