Functional Neuroanatomy Flashcards
(31 cards)
Three brain components
forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain
Forebrain
cerebral hemispheres and diencephalon
Hindbrain (aka brainstem)
medulla, pons and cerebellum, from connection between brain and spinal cord
Front/back
dorsal/ventral
Up/down
Rostral/superior vs. caudal/inferior
Planes in Imaging:
Horizontal/axial, coronal, sagittal
Horizontal/axial
parallel to the floor
Coronal
perpendicular to the floor (cutrs across the brain approx. where the two ears are like a crown)
Sagittal
perpendicular to the ground from forehead to occiput
Grey matter
where synaptic communication takes place
Orbitofrontal/ventromedial region functions
emotion regulation, reward monitoring, personality,
Damage to OFC
disinhibition
Damage to Ventromedial region
disordered reward/punishment processing and problems marking perceptual or learnign experiences with reward value and emotional significance
Dorsolateral
working memory
Dorsolateral damage
Dysexecutive syndromes, impairments in working memory and poor attentional control of behavior
Dorsomedial region
intentional and behavioral activation
Dorsomedial damage
Impairments in initiated behavior including akinetic mutism
Akinetic mutism
person is alert and awake but cannot speak
Subdivisions of the frontal lobe
orbitofrontal/ventromedial, dorsolateral, dorsomedial
Divisions of temporal lobe
temporal polar cortical areas, ventral temporal areas, posterior temporal region
Temporal polar cortical area
intersensory integration and semantic memory
Ventral temporal area
object recognition and discrimination
Bilateral ventral temporal damage
Object of face agnosia
Posterior temporal region
comprised of the middle and superior temporal sulci, which contains the primary auditory areas and Wernicke’s area, important for language comprehension
