Functional Recovery Flashcards

1
Q

What is functional recovery

A

I’m the 1960s ,researchers studied case studies of stroke patients and discovered that the brain can rewire itself over time ,so that some level of function can be regained

Q

What is neuron unmasking

A

-Much like plasticity ,using dormat (inactive) neurons to do a job that they don’t normally wouldn’t do unmasks (activates) them and they begin to work
-This gives way to new synaptic pathways and structures in the brain
-Helping people to recover from injury and complete tasks is intislly lost through their injury

Q

What is stem cell treatment ?

A

-Stem cells are unspecialised cells that can then become any type of cell
-embryonic and adult stem cells can be injected to create new neuronal cells and thus repair the damage

Q

What is a second way that stem cells can treat brain damage

A

Transplanted stem cells secrete growth factors that’s somehow ‘rescue’ the injured cell

Q

What is the final way that stem cells can treat brain damage

A

Transplanted stem cells form a neural network ,that links to the un injured brain site , where new stem cells are made ,with the damaged region of the brain
