Functions and Components of the Nervous System Flashcards
(11 cards)
function of the nervous system
- works in conjuction with the endocrine system to maintain hormonal balance.
- registers sensory messages and creates motor responses
- stores information
components of the nervous system
- brain- 12 pair of cranial nerves,
- spinal cord- 31 pair of spinal nerves,
- nerves
types of nerves
- afferent (sensory)
- efferent (motor)
- mixed
afferent nerves
sensory nerves-nerves that transmit sensory messages from the sensory organ to the brain.
efferent nerves
motor nerves- nerves that send a message from the brain to the muscles for movement.
mixed nerves
nerves capable of sending messages in both directions creating both sensory and motor responses.
foramen magnum
large opening at bottom of skull where the brain connects to the spinal cord
2 main divisions of the Nervous System
central nervous system (CNS)
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
2 important cranial nerves
- 5th (Trigemimal or Trifacial)
- 7th (Facial)
5th cranial nerve or Trigeminal/Trifacial
Sensory nerve of the face.
Mixed nerve, controls the muscles of mastication
7th cranial nerve or Facial
Motor nerve of the face.
Responsible for facial expressions and secretion or saliva and tears.
