Functions + Categories Flashcards
(8 cards)
Axial Skeleton
• Consists 50 bones
• Includes Boney Framework of the head + tranc
• Acts as the body axis
Appendicular Skeleton
• Consists 126 bones
• forms the framework
• For the extremities, limbs for the shoulders and hips
• Acts as body’s appendages
What Are The 5 Functions of The Skeletal System
• Serves as a frame for the body
• Protects organs
• Serves as a lever for movement
• Forms blood cells
• Stores minerals
What Are 4 Main Categories of Bones + Example
• Flat - Ribs, Cranium
• Short - Carpals of the writs, tarsals of the ankle
• Irregular - Vertebrae, facial bones
• Long - Most of the skeleton including bones of arms and legs
Differences Between Compact + Spongy Bone
• Compact is hard and dense but Spongy bone is more spaced
• Compact makes up the main shaft of long bones + outer layers of other bones
• Spongy are found at the epiphysis (ends) of the long bones
Osteoblast
• Essential in bone formation not only during growth
• Also in repair of injuries
Osteoclast
• Degrade bone to initiate normal bone remodelling & mediate bone
• Aged bones resorption
• Broken bone or tissue
Osteocyte
• Regulate local mineral deposition & chemistry
• At bone matrix level
