Fundamentals of Communication Flashcards
(21 cards)
How does McCormack define communication?
Communication is a process of sharing and conveying messages or information from one person to another within and across channels, contexts, media, and cultures.
State the Nature of Communication.
► Communication is a process.
► Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver).
► Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, nonverbal (actions), or both spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time.
State the Elements of Communication.
Speaker; Message; Encoding; Channel; decoding; Receiver; Feedback; Context; Barrier
An element of communication; it is the source of the information or message.
Speaker
An element of communication; it is the information, ideas, or thoughts conveyed by the speaker in words or in actions.
Message
It is the process of converting the message into words, actions, or other forms that the speaker understands
Encoding
The medium or the means, such as personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal, in which the encoded message is conveyed.
Channel
It is the process of interpreting the message of the speaker by the receiver.
decoding
Refers to the recipient of the message, or someone who decodes the message
Receiver
Refers to the reactions, responses, or information provided by the receiver
Feedback
It refers to the environment where communication takes place.
Context
These are the factors that affect the flow of communication.
Barrier
Name the 3 Models of Communication discussed.
Shannon-Weaver Model; Transaction Model; Schramm Model
It is known as the “Mother of All Communication Models”. It depicts communication a linear or one-way process consisting of five elements.
Shannon-Weaver Model
What are the five elements that comprise the one-way process of “The Mother of All Communication Models”?
- Source (producer of the message)
- Transmitter (encoder of message into signals)
- Channel (signals adapted for transmission)
- Receiver (decoder of the message from the signal)
- destination
“The Mother of All Communication Models” is criticized for missing one essential element in the communication process which is? Why is this element essential in the communication process?
Feedback. Without feedback, the speaker will not whether the receiver understands the message or not.
A model of communication depicting a two-way process with the inclusion of feedback as one element.
Transaction Model
differentiate the ‘Transaction Model’ and the ‘Shannon-Weaver Model’.
Compared to the Shannon-Weaver Model, the Transaction Model is more interactive. It depicts a collaborative exchange of messages between communicators with the aim of understanding each other.
It modified the Shannon-Weaver Model (1954). It is a circular model that shows that messages go into two directions.
Schramm Model.
What are the four key principles of the Schramm Model?
- Communication is circular not linear.
- Communication is usually equal and reciprocal.
- Messages require interpretation.
- There are 3 steps of communicating: encoding, decoding, and interpreting.
These are specifically the values, beliefs, and background knowledge that impact how someone sends and how someone receives messages.
