Fundamentals of Physics Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an interaction?
When two objects influence each other and cause a pair of forces to happen.
What changes can forces cause?
Speed, direction, shape.
What is a contact force?
A force that arises between two objects that are touching, eg tyres on a road.
Give examples of contact force.
Friction, water resistance, air resistance, upthrust.
What is non-contact force?
Forces that arise between two objects at a distance, eg gravity and a stone.
Give examples of non-contact force.
Gravity force, magnetic force.
What direction are forces moving to cause compression?
Two pushing forces - the object contracts.
What direction are forces moving to cause tension?
Two pulling forces - the object extends.
Where does friction take place?
Between solid surfaces.
Is the frictional force working in the same or opposite direction of the motion?
Opposite.
When energy is transferred, is it used up?
No, it stays the same when transferred.
Name 5 types of energy stores.
Chemical, kinetic, elastic, gravitational, thermal.
Name 5 energy pathways.
Electrical, mechanical, radiation, thermal, chemical.
