What are the general objectives of social studies?
The general objectives of social studies are as follows:
1. It affords students the ability to adapt to changing environments. For instance, when it snows in Europe anyone traveling over there knows that they must get thick clothes in order to survive in such places.
2. Social studies aims at teaching students that all members of the society are equal, irrespective of gender, religion, or language and that we must learn to work together.
3. It gives students the opportunity to learn different skills. For instance, students learn goal-setting skills (how to set and achieve goals in life), observation and analytical skills (how to make sound judgments and decisions).
4. Social studies enables students to participate in the affairs of the community, country, and the world at large.
5. It teaches students to appreciate where they come from. That is, Africa, the cultures of the ethnic groups in their country and those of other countries.
6. To help resolve our contemporary, social, and individual problems.
7. It enables students to inculcate the right type of values.
8. Social studies affords opportunities to students such interests that will enable them to use their leisure properly.
9. Social studies enables students to know that natural resources must be managed properly in order to conserve and preserve them.
