Fungi | Vocab and StudyCards Flashcards
(32 cards)
What domain are fungi apart of?
Domain Eukaryote
Why are fungi important?
When the earliest plants did not have true roots and leaves for nutrition they formed symbiotic relationships with fungi in order to get nutrients.
How do fungi get their nutrients?
They are hetetrophic and absorb nutrients from the enviroment
Are fungi more related to plants or animals?
Animals
What is the energy reserve of Fungi?
Glycogen
How do fungi reproduce?
Asexually by producing spores
Define the Hyphae
The fungal body which is comprised of threads aka the building block of the fungus
Mycellium
The collection of hypae in a fungal body
How can spores be carried?
By the wind
What are other asexual fungi called
Yeasts
What is the cell wall of fungi made up of?
Chitin
How do fugi ingest their food?
Through the hyphae, they secrete enzymes that break down material into simple molecules
List the 5 different types of fungi?
Chytrids Zygomycetes Ascomycetes Sac Fungi Basidiomycetes
List the 3 main differences of plants and fungi:
1) Plants have chloroplasts while fungi do not
2) Plant cell walls are made out of cellulose while fungi are made out of chitin
3) A plants energy reserve is starch while a fungi’s energy reserve is made out of glycogen
What defines a fungi’s role in their enviroment
Their mode of nutrition
What are the 3 modes of nutrition for fungi?
1) Decomposers
2) Parasitic
3) Mutualistic
Why are chyrtids important?
They have caused amphibian decline and can effect animal behavior
Are chytrids decompoers or parastic?
both
What is an example of a Zygomycetes
Bread mold
Zygomycetes hyphae will _______ food and absorb their nutrients
Penetrate
Define ascocarp
The sac and cup fungi or Ascomycetes
Define Ascus
The fingerlike sac the developers during sexual reproduction
Give exmaples of Basidiomycetes
Mushrooms, shelf fungi, and some molds
Basidium
The clublike strucutre on the Basidiomycetes that is defined by a club structure
