How do you execute a missed approach on the Garmin G-1000?

A
  1. Hit the suspend soft key button on the bottom of the PFD. The autopilot thinks you landed, so it put you in suspend mode.
  2. If you just flew an ILS approach, push the CDI button twice to go back to GPS mode (if that’s what you want).

How do you arm VNAV with the Garmin G-1000?

A
  1. Confirm or input altitude constraints in active flight plan.
  2. Set altitude preselect to lowest assigned altitude.
  3. Nav mode
  4. VNAV. VPTH should show up in white to indicate that it’s armed. (For a non-Garmin auto pilot, you’ll have to set the vertical speed required at the TOD).

If you are using the Garmin G-1000 and want to start on your vertical path immediately and before you get to your TOD, what do you do?

A

Select the VNAV Direct soft key on the bottom of the PFD.

If ATC tells you to cross 10 miles north of the GOFER VOR at 3,000 feet and to descend at Pilot discretion, how would you do that on the Garmin G1000?

A

You could just start down immediately. However the better choice is usually to use VNAV in order to remain at altitude as long as possible.

  1. Go into the active flight plan on the MFD.
  2. Put the curser on the GOFER VOR waypoint.
  3. Select the Along Track Offset / ATK OFS soft key on the bottom of the screen.
  4. Enter the 10 mile offset.
  5. Your new waypoint should show up in your flight plan and on the moving map.
  6. Set 3,000 in the altitude preselect window. (Remember to always select the lowest altitude to which you are cleared).
  7. VNAV. You can push this button anytime before you get to the TOD. On the first G-1000s, VNAV will time out if you don’t press the button within five minutes of the TOD. That doesn’t happen on the G-1000 NXI, though.

How do you fly a STAR / arrival with a descend via clearance?

A
  1. After you load the arrival by using the Procedures / PROC button, check your altitudes in the MFD.
  2. Set the lowest altitude in the procedure in the altitude preselect.
  3. The vertical altitude display will show you all the altitude constraints in the procedure.
  4. Arm VNAV by pressing the VNAV button.

When you are within one minute of the top of descent, you’ll see a magenta altitude appear near the altitude field in the PFD. What is that?

A

This is the altitude of the upcoming altitude constraint.

You’ll hear, “Vertical Track” and see a flashing message on the top of the screen that tells you the TOD is within one minute.

A vertical deviation indicator / VDI will appear to the left of the altitude tape. It will have a magenta arrow that descends from the top.

The vertical speed required indication will show up on the VSI tape to the right of the altitude tape.

This is the time to confirm that the correct altitude is set in the altitude preselect, and VNAV is armed / VPTH shows in white at the top of your screen.

  3. Activate the approach.
  4. Once an approach has been activated, you might have to touch the VNAV button again.

The system will automatically switch the CDI source to the localizer / LOC1, and the vertical path guidance in magenta is replaced with guide slope vertical guidance in green.

What is the difference between the Nav button and the approach button?

A

The nav button arms the right - left / horizontal course.

The approach button arms both the horizontal navigation and the up - down / vertical navigation.

You can think of the approach button as the arm button that allows you to push just one button instead of two.

Say you are using the Garmin G-1000 auto pilot, and ATC is giving you vectors to final. You are in heading mode, and ATC tells you to intercept the final approach course. What button do you push?

A

The nav button. That’s because they didn’t clear you for the approach, so you can’t descend yet.

With the nav button, once the needle comes in, the gps will take over the heading.
