What are the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

A

Chronic abdominal pain (Described as crampy w/ variable intensity, which improves w/ defecation) and altered bowel habits. Other GI-symptoms: GERD, dysphagia, early satiety, nausea, chest pain.

A

What are the most common cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO)?

A

[ABC] Adhesions from previous surgeries (about 75% of cases). Bulge/hernia (second most common cause). Cancer/tumor (most commonly metastatic colorectal cancer).

How do we diagnose Meckel diverticulum?

A

Technetium scintigraphy (nuclear medicine) to ID areas of ectopic gastric mucosa.

What would be the cause of intussusception in children? What would be a buzzword symptom for this disease?

A

Mostly idiopathic (75%). Can be caused by adenovirus, Meckel’s diverticulum. Causes currant jelly stools. Bull’s eye appearance on ultrasonography.

What is Intestinal Ileus? What is the cause?

A

It is lack of peristalsis in the GI tract. Caused after post-surgical or severe illness that decreases blood flow to the gut.

A

A

Atherosclerosis of the celiac artery or mesenteric artery. Causes extreme pain.

What is angiodysplasia?

A

A small vascular malformation of the gut, have tendency to bleed; causes unexplained GI bleed ing and anemia. Location: most often in the cecum or ascending colon. Diagnosis done by colonoscopy or angiography.

What are the symptoms of Carcinoid syndrome? When do we see it?

A

[BeFDR] Bronchospasm. Flushing. Diarrhea. Right-sided heart disease/murmur. Only seen if the tumor is outside of the GI tract: the liver metabolizes all the serotonin that is produced in the GI.
