What are the 4 stages of the digestive process.
Ingestion- Food taken in to through the mouth.
Digestion- Food broken down, Mechanically and chemically.
Absorption- Nutrients pass through the walls of organs into bloodstream.
Elimination- Undigested components are excreted as faeces
What is Peristalsis?
A caterpillar like motion moving food along the tract.
What are the functions of the liver (6)
Metabolise Carbohydrates, Fats and Proteins.
Detoxification of drugs and toxins
Inactivation of Hormones
Production of heat
Secretion of Bile
Storage of Substances
What are the functions of the Pancreas (2)
Production of Pancreatic juice
Production of insulin (to control blood sugar)
What is the peritoneum?
The membrane which lines the abdomen and covers abdominal organs.
Prevents friction as organs move against each other, helps to keep them in position.
What is the function of the spleen?
Produce white blood cells.
Break down old red blood cells
Store new red blood cells
What is the function of the Kidneys? (3)
Filters the blood
Regulates salt and water balance
Excretes Urine
