GBS Flashcards
Early onset GBS is classified as occurring:
Between 0-6 days of life
Late onset GBS is classified as:
Between 7-89 days
How many babies with early or late GBS meningitis have long term neurologic sequelae?
50%
What type of bacteria is Group B Strep?
gram-positive, aerobic diplococci
What type of GBS usually infects infants?
Type III is the predominant cause of early-onset meningitis and the majority of late-onset infections in infants
Where does GBS come from?
Group B streptococci are common inhabitants of the human gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts
What is the colonization rate in pregnant women for GBS?
The colonization rate in pregnant women ranges from 15% to 35%. Colonization during pregnancy can be constant or intermittent
Do intrapartum antibiotics affect early-onset or late-onset GBS disease, or both?
ONLY early onset. The use of intrapartum chemoprophylaxis has had no measurable impact on late-onset GBS disease.
What are risk factors for early-onset GBS disease? (name 7 items)
- Preterm infants (less than 37 weeks’ gestation),
- ROM x 18 hours or more,
- Infants born to women with high genital GBS inoculum
- intrapartum fever (temperature 38°C [100.4°F] or greater)
- chorioamnionitis
- GBS bacteriuria during the current pregnancy
- previous infant with invasive GBS disease
