What is a plane of movement?
An imaginary flat surface that divides the body and shows the direction of movement.
What is an axis of movement?
An imaginary line around which the body or a body part rotates.
Name the three planes of movement.
Sagittal, Frontal, and Transverse.
Name the three axes of rotation.
Frontal, Sagittal, and Longitudinal.
What is the sagittal plane?
A vertical plane dividing the body into left and right.
What movements occur in the sagittal plane?
Flexion and extension.
e.g. running, squatting.
What is the frontal plane?
A vertical plane dividing the body into front and back.
What movements occur in the frontal plane?
Abduction and adduction.
e.g. star jumps.
What is the transverse plane?
A horizontal plane dividing the body into top and bottom.
What movements occur in the transverse plane?
Rotational movements.
e.g. golf swing, twist in discus.
What is the longitudinal axis?
A vertical axis running head to toe.
What movements occur around the longitudinal axis?
Rotational movements like pirouettes or spins.
What is the frontal axis?
A horizontal axis running from front to back of the body.
What movements occur around the frontal axis?
Flexion and extension.
e.g. somersault.
What is the sagittal axis?
A horizontal axis running side to side.
