Gender and crime Flashcards
What are some of the key features of female violent crime?
Attacking self-defence. Sexuality seems to be a factor, women tend to use less violence than then they tend to use more kitchen implements.

82%
whats the chivalry argument
polcie and courts treat women more favourably then men. women get away w more then men. they are able to use their femininity to talk their way out of minor offences.
rape cases evidence.
The evidence is inconclusive and the woman has seen as responsible for their attack
merton and strain theory, applied to women. sociologist leonard
If not able to achieve the American dream, it causes some men to innovate. This sociologist argue that women’s goals and more about successful relationships than making money so stealing isn’t an issue.
culture theory and environment theory applied to women
Women aren’t considered in any art of cultural studies. It was taken for granted the only men joinied gangs. environmental studies tend to focus on social class. it’s taken for granted at the higher level I’ve cried the result of male not female criminality
Labelling theory chambliss
Cassandra social class are not gender. The sociologist research on the Saints and roughnecks looks and they are not female activity. Females argue that labelling is important and can be used to explain why police and courts treat men differently to women.
marxist theory
Traditional Marxist focus on social class and ignore gender. If working class men can be forced into crime because of capitalism why can’t women. New realism brought ethnicity into the picture but left women out of it?
Freda adler
Hockey that the female crime rate was increasing due to women’s operation. Women must into compete for men’s jobs and becoming more like men. Women have more opportunity.
freda adler evaluation
Correct how she argues that women’s behaviour has changed, especially sexually in drinking. But her argument is caused by women’s liberation isn’t convincing. Her analysis was correct we would say increasing crime by liberated middle-class women which hasn’t happened yet.
pat carlen
conducted research on women that been convicted of one or more crimes. include theft fraud and burglary. Working class. Rejected adlers view. Focused and rational choice theory which argues all of us have potential to be criminal.
evaluation of carlen
The main problem with her work It’s dangerous to generalise from her findings. Many women so far from a breakdown in class and gender deals but don’t turn to crime.
feminist: differential socialisation
boys & girls socialised differently. Boys are brought up to be masculine and aggressive and competitive. Which can lead them to crime. Girls are socialised to be more passive nurturing and caring leading them away from criminality.
Feminist views: opportunities
Women are more likely to have children responsibilities preventing them from being criminal. As well as housework. Women have less opportunities due to this.
Feminist views: risktaking
Women type fewer risks in life compared to men. Women drive faster and have more dangerous hobbies. Crime is a high risk activity making get appealing to men. Women prefer high activities like nurture and children, religion and shopping. However, this is seem to be sexist and outdated.
