Minority stress
Differences in the prevalence of mental health problems among non-heterosexual/non-cisgencer populations can largely be explained as a consequence of social stigma, prolonged stress
Meyer’s minority stress model
- Experiencing social exclusion leads to increased exposure to stressors
- Overexposure to stressors siminishes ability to cope
- These challenges lead to negative consequences on relationships/ability to maintain social supports
- Cognitive processes may be affected
- Increased risk of developing psychopathologies
Microaggressions
Subtle forms of discrimination -> demeaning messaging
Microagressions theory
An accumulation of demeaning/degrading human interactions has consequences on individuals ability to feel safe, accepted and valued in society
Microinvalidation
-comments excluding, negating, rendering impossible the psychological thoughts/feelings/reality experienced by a member of a marginalized group
Ex: telling a same sex couple that they aare overreacting when they say theyre afraid to hold hands in public
Microassaults
-more «traditional» forms of discrimination
-specific conditions that act in the perpetrators favour
-ex: leaving anonymous comments online, ew she looks like a man next to pic of lesbian
Microinsults
-statements/actions that demean/devalue individuals identity
-may not always be percieved
-telling a trans woman that she looks like a «real woman» today
Oh an orange scarf, thats a choice! You can pull it off congrats! -> microinsult?
No because there is no marginalized social identity being insulted
Microaffirmations
-small acts that are usually private, often unconscious but very effective
-ex father in law introducing son in law as «my sons husband» makes him feel seen
Queer

-its a spectrum
Gender fluid
