General Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is an input device?
A hardware device used to enter data into a computer (e.g., keyboard, mouse).
What is an output device?
A hardware device that receives data from a computer and presents it (e.g., monitor, printer).
Give an example of a sensor used as an input device.
Temperature sensor, motion sensor, or light sensor.
What is secondary storage?
Non-volatile storage used to store data long-term (e.g., HDD, SSD).
Give one advantage of SSD over HDD.
Faster read/write speeds and no moving parts.
What is optical storage?
Storage using lasers to read/write data (e.g., CD, DVD).
What does an AND gate output when both inputs are 1?
1
What does an OR gate output when one input is 1?
1
What is the binary equivalent of the denary number 10?
1010
What is a truth table?
A table showing all possible input combinations and their outputs for logic gates.
What is the purpose of RAM?
Temporarily stores data and instructions currently being used.
What is ROM used for?
Stores permanent instructions such as the BIOS.
How is the size of a text file calculated?
Characters × 1 byte (assuming ASCII).
How is image file size calculated?
Width × Height × Colour depth (bits per pixel).
What is system software?
Software that manages the hardware and system operations (e.g., OS).
What is application software?
Software that allows the user to perform specific tasks (e.g., word processor).
What does the ALU do?
Performs arithmetic and logic operations.
What is the function of the control unit?
Manages the execution of instructions in the CPU.
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network – connects devices in a small geographic area.
What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network – connects devices over large distances.
What is an IP address?
A unique address that identifies a device on a network.
What does HTTP stand for?
Hypertext Transfer Protocol.
What is the purpose of DNS?
Translates domain names into IP addresses.
What is phishing?
A method of tricking users into giving up personal information via fake emails.
