General Flashcards

1
Q

State the basic function of Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) process instrumentation?
(in accordance with AX6AU01-00526?)

A

MPC –> Monitor, Protect, Control

MONITOR - measure plant parameters for alarms & indications, process control and protective functions such as trips.

PROTECT - use measured plant parameters as inputs to safety systems to protect the three barriers to fission product release. (FRC –> Fuel cladding, RCS pressure boundary, Containment)

CONTROL - use measured plant parameters as inputs for either manual or automatic control of that parameter.

Q

Describe the importance of isolating protection channels from control channels?
(in accordance with AX6AU01-00526)

A

PROTECTION channels –> are required to protect the the core and/or prevent damage to the reactor coolant system and containment boundaries. They must meet strict guidelines: using redundant channels, installed online testing capability, separating the redundant channels both electrically and physically.

CONTROL channels –> or non-protective channels provide for and improve the economic operation of the plant but are not needed to protect the core or maintain containment integrity.Control channels must be isolated from protection channels to prevent control channel faults from degrading the protection channels performance.
