- relative location refers to the distance and direction from one place to another

- Declaration made by government authorities to enable assistance
- The human environment affects people’s lives and livelihoods
- Local environment is overwhelmed and needs national or international assistance for its recovery
- When at least 20 people are killed and/or an insurance damage of at least US$16.2 million

- Volcanic activity, earthquakes, tsunamis
- Linked to tectonic processes
- Human activity only contributes in a minimal manner
