types of infectious diarrhea

A
  • food poisoning: 2-6 hrs after ingestion (salmonella, norovirus, campylobacter, e. coli, listeria) -> tx supportive
  • traveler’s diarrhea: 24-72 hr incubation period. e. coli or viral. tx supportive– abx possible - cipro 500 mg BID x 5 days. Pepto-Bismol can help.
  • giardiasis: incubation 10-20 days. giardia lamblia. tx metronidazole 250 mg tid x 7 days
  • bloody diarrhea: campylobacteri jejuni, enterohemorrhagic e.coli, Shigella toxin E. coli (STEC), shigella, c. diff
