Privileges of PPL
- May act as PIC of an aircraft of the category for which the license is granted and for which the pilots holds a type rating, and may carry passengers.
- May act as co-pilot of an aircraft of the category for which the license is granted and for which the pilots holds a type rating, and which is required to be operated with a co-pilot.
Limitations of PPL
Must not act as PIC of an aircraft
- for remuneration,
- if the aircraft is operated for hire or reward,
- if the aircraft is operated at night or on a XC flight or carrying a sling load unless the the training has been completed and signed off.
- unless the PIC has complied with all requirements of a notice issued under subpart I.
Documents to carry
- Certificate of airworthiness
- Logbook
- Operators Manual
- Weight & Balance
- Radio Station Levels
IM SAFE
Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion
HASELL
Height, Airframe, Security, Engine, Location, Lookout

What is the technical log
A document specific to every aircraft which details the maintenance status of that aircraft. It must be carried on board an aircraft whenever it flies.
Currency requirements
A holder must comply with the following rules:
- 61.35 Medical requirements
- 61.37 Recent flight experience
- 61.39 Biennial flight review
In other words:
- hold a current medical certificate at least class 2 or DL9,
- have carried out as PIC 3 take-offs and 3 landings during day/night when carrying passengers in the preceeding 90 days , or demonstrated to a CAT A/B instructor
- No flying more than 24 months without a BFR. Can be renewed up to 60 days before due date.
Who issues magnetic and who issues true wind directions?
- ATIS is MAGNETIC
- METAR, TAF, AAW etc are TRUE
Explain group rating system
Both aircraft and runways have a group rating.
The worse the T/O and Landing performance of the aircraft, the higher the rating.
The better the runway, the higher the rating.
Aircraft may take off from an runway greater than or equal the group rating.
What is the Warrior’s fuel consumption per hour?
34l/hr
What altitudes to fly at?
Magnetic Northerly track - ODD plus 500ft
Magnetic Southerly track - EVEN plus 500ft
(Over 3000ft AMSL)
How often are TAFs issued?
Most twice daily, except int’l (AA, WN, CH) 8 times daily
What is a TEMPO?
A temporary change in weather conditions indicated in the TAF
What is CAVOK?
Ceiling (clouds) and visibility are OK
What is an impulse coupling?
The impulse coupling is part of the magneto and helps to rotate the magneto fast enough to produce a good spark at startup and to retard the timing of the spark during the start cycle
What are the functions of oil in an engine?
Cooling, Reduces friction, Protects, Sealing, Cleaning
How long do you have legally to log a flight
1 week after the flight, except int’l, in which case it’s 14 days (Part 61)
What are the VFR met minima in class C, D, and E airspace?
Part 91 defines the met minima.
In class C, D, or E controlled airspace, the met minima are:
Distance from cloud:
2km horizontal distance from cloud, 1000ft vertically outside CTZ, 500ft inside CTZ
Visibility:
5km below 10,000ft; 8km above 10,000ft
What part defines how to report an incident?
Part 12 - Accidents, Incidents, Statistics
How old do you have to be for a PPL in NZ?
17 years
What is the minimum equipment required for aircraft?
- Airspeed indicator
- Altimeter
- Compass
- Fuel tank gauge
- Engine tacho (RPMs)
- Oil pressure gauge / Coolant temp gauge
- Oil temperature if engine rated over 250HP
- Manifold pressure if super/turbocharged or constant-speed
- CHT if over 250HP
- Flap position indicator unless visual inspection possible
- Landing gear position
- Ammeter
- CO monitor
What is a trigger NOTAM?
A trigger NOTAM is used to notify of certain long term changes and amendments and is usually issued 28 days in advance
What is a cloud base / ceiling?
Cloud base is the height above ground of the lowest layer of cloud; Cloud ceiling is the height above ground of the lowest cloud layer that covers half of the sky
