Q

What are the basic methods for shifting up?

A

You must release the accelerator, press the clutch and shift into neutral at the same time, release the clutch, let the engine and gears slow to the required rpm for the next gear, press the clutch and shift into a higher gear at the same time, then release the clutch and press the accelerator at the same time. Acceleration is not involved until the very end, and definitely not while pressing the clutch.

Q

If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, when should you select a low range?

A

Before entering a downgrade

If you keep applying the brakes to control your speed on a steep descent, the brakes will fade (lose their effectiveness). Instead, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, select a low range that prevents the transmission from shifting up beyond the selected gear. This will generate a braking effect to slow the vehicle, known as engine braking. The lower the gear, the greater the engine braking effect. Apply the brakes only when engine braking is insufficient or you want to stop.

Q

When there’s a hazard ahead, it’s almost always quicker for you to _________ than to come to a full stop.

A

Steer clear of it. Large vehicles have long stopping distances. If your faced with a hazard ahead and you don’t have enough room to stop, try to steer away from the hazard. It’s usually quicker to turn away than to come to a full stop. (However, top-heavy vehicles and tractors with multiple trailers may flip over.)

21
Q

Why is it important to use a helper when backing?

A

*Because you have blind spots. *

Before you start the two of you should agree on a set of hand signals for “go” and (most importantly) “stop.”

22
Q

When should you not use retarders?

A

If your drive wheels have poor traction.

While retarders can help reduce the need for braking, they can make skid more likely on slippery roads. Therefore, you should turn off your retarders whenever the road is wet, icy, or snow-covered.

23
Q

Total stopping distance equals

A

perception distance+reaction distance+braking distance

Total stopping distance is the sum of your perception distance (how far your vehicle goes from when you see the hazard until your brain processes it), reaction distance (how far the vehicle goes from when your brain orders your foot to take action until your foot actually starts to brake), and braking distance (how far the vehicle continues to travel once you apply the brake).

24
How should you test a parking brake?
*Stop your vehicle, set the parking brake, and gently pull against it in low gear.* Stop your vehicle and set only the parking brake you want to test (power unit or trailer). Select a low gear. Gently pull forward against the parking brake to make sure the parking brake holds.
25
When you start to drive down a steep downgrade, which of the following should influence your choice of speed?
When choosing a safe speed for driving down a steep downgrade, consider its steepness, its length, the road and weather conditions, and the weight of your vehicle and its cargo.
26
What might happen if you swing wide to the left before you turn right?
*Someone might try to pass you on your right.* If you swing wide to the left, a driver may try to pass you on your right while you are turning. Instead, make the right turn with the rear of your vehicle as close to the curb as possible and turn wide as you complete the turn. This will deny drivers room on the right to try to pass you.
27
Always try to back toward the driver's side because
*You can see better, watching the vehicle's rear from the side window.* You should always back toward the driver's side even if you have to go around the block to put your vehicle in this position. By backing toward the driver's side, you will be able to see things much more easily. For example, you can keep an eye on the vehicle's rear by viewing it from your side window. If your truck pulls in either direction, it needs service. There may be hazards on either side of your vehicle, of course.
28
What is the main reason to perform a vehicle inspection?
*To make sure your vehicle is safe.* The main purpose of a vehicle inspection is to determine whether your vehicle is safe enough to drive. This includes your safety and that of other road users. In addition, discovering defects during a vehicle inspection can help avert a costly or even dangerous breakdown on the road.
29
What is a particular risk associated with transporting livestock?
*They can change your vehicle's center of gravity.* These large animals may lean on curves, shifting the center of gravity of your vehicle and thus increasing the chance of a rollover. Slow down and use caution on sharp curves such as on-ramps and off-ramps.
30
Letting the air out of hot tires
*Is a bad idea because when the tires cool off, the pressure will be too low.* When tires get hot, the air pressure increases. However, relieving that extra pressure will leave the air pressure too low when the tires cool again, and then the tires may catch fire or blow out. If your tires are too hot to touch, stop until they have cooled down.
31
To obtain a New York CDL, you must be
*A resident of New York State.* To obtain a NY CDL, you must be a resident of NY State. Furthermore, you can only hold one license a time. If you move to New York from another state, you must exchange your out of state CDL for a NY CDL within 30 days of becoming a legal resident of NY.
32
If you're going to carry an oversized load, you must have all of the following
* Required signs (flags, lamps, and reflectors) * Required permits * Some oversized loads may also require a police escort or pilot vehicles with warning signs or flashing lights*
33
What is a “header board?"
*A safety device behind you* A front-end header board is located at the front part of a trailer. The header board prevents cargo from moving forward (and possibly injuring you) in the event of a crash or suddent stop. Check to make sure that the header board is secure, upright and undamaged (no dents, no corrosion, no missing rivets, etc.).
34
What is a key steering component?
*Gear box. The gear box is an integral part of the steering system.*
35
What should you be checking during a trip?
All of the vehicle's key systems * instruments, gauges, tires, voltmeter mirros and cargo * make sure to put your phone aside for the entire trip
36
On which types of fires should you NOT use a B:C fire extinguisher?
*Wood* A B:C fire extinguisher should not be used on burning materials that you can use ordinary water on, such as wood, paper, and cloth. These require an A or A:B:C fire extinguisher.
37
An antilock braking system (ABS) will
*Keep your wheels from locking when you brake hard.* ABS Kicks in only to keep the wheels from locking, which could cause a skid. ABS does not change the way you normally brake the rest of the time. It is not a substitute for careful braking, defensive driving, good brakes, or regular maintenance.
38
To use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire, you should
1. Stand upwind from the fire at a safe distance 2. Let the wind carry the entinguisher from you to the fire. 3. Aim the extinguisher at the source or base of the fire, not up in the flames. Persist until the burning material has cooled to the point that the fire cannot restart.
39
What traffic violations are you required to notify your employer of within 30 days?
If you are convicted of any traffic violations except parking violations, you must notify your employer within 30 days. This applies whether you were driving a commercial motor vehicle or some other motor vehicle at the time.
40
How can you determine if your vehicle is equipped with an antilock braking system (ABS)?
Today, most vehicles with ABS have a light on the instrument panel that will light up briefly when the vehicle is started to alert you about the ABS. Or you can check for wires from your brakes.
41
As you inspect each tire, you should check
For all sorts of possible problems, including worn tires (inadequate tread depth or fabric showing through sidewalls), cracked valve stems, and cuts or other damage. Section 2.1.3 of the New York State Commercial Driver's Manual has a full list of checks for you to make.
42
If you are convicted of driving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) that federal or state inspectors have ordered out of service,
*You will be disqualified from commercial driving for at least 90 days.* If a federal or state inspector judges a CMV to be unsafe, they will order it out of service. If you are convicted of driving it anyway, you will be disqualified from commercial driving for between 90 days and one year if it's your first offense.
43
In very hot weather, you see tar "bleeding" through the pavement. What effect may this have?
*It may make the road more slippery. * Tar in the road pavement frequently rises to the surface in the very hot weather. Spots where tar "bleeds" to the surface are very slippery. Avoid these spots where possible and be ready to counteract a skid.
44
If you are convicted of railroad grade crossing violations twice within a three-year period, you will receive
*a 120 day disqualification* Railroad grade crossing violating inclue failing to stop if a train is approaching and failing to obey traffic control signals. If you are convicted of a railroad grade crossing violation, you will be disqualified from commercial driving for 60 days if it was your first offense, 120 days if it was your second offense within three years, or one year if it was your third offense within three years.
45
If you are driving a 30-foot vehicle at 55 mph, you should leave how many seconds of following distance?
4 seconds. The formula for following distance is 1 second per 10 feet of vehicle, plus an extra second if you are traveling over 40 mph. Therefore, for a 30 foot vehicle traveling at 55 mph, you should leave a following distance of 4 seconds.
46
When can you transport hazardous materials without a hazardous materials (HazMat) endorsement on your CDL?
*If your vehicle doesn't require placarding.* You must have a hazardous materials (HazMat) endorsement on your CDL. to drive a vehicle that is placarded for hazardous materials. However not all hazardouse material shipments require placarding your vehicle. For example, relatively small quantities of consumer-grade chemicals such as drain openers and bleaches may be exempt. NY State follows federal regulations on this.
47
What is a particular risk associated with transporting hanging meat?
*It may change your vehicle's handling characteristics* Hanging meat carcasses have a high center of gravity and may sway on curves, changing the handling characteristics of your vehicle. Slow down and use caution on sharp curves such as on-ramps and off-ramps.
48
Whenever you drive a heavily loaded vehicle on __________, you should pay special attention to the space below your vehicle.
*A dirt road, an unpaved yard, a railroad grade crossing* When your vehicle is heavily loaded, there may be very little space underneath it. This is often a problem on dirt roads and in unpaved yards. Don't take a chance on getting hung up. It is also possible to get stuck when driving a low slung vehicle such as a lowboy or moving van across a raised railroad grade crossing.
49
For how long will you lose your CDL driving privileges if you are convicted of a second DUI offense?
*Life* If you are convicted of DUI for a second time, you will lose your CDL privileges for life. While you are driving a CMV, a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.04% or above qualifies as DUI. Your first offense is a wake up call and a chance to get help, but your second offense is going to mean enemployment. If you get a DUI, seek help before you lose your salary and your future.
