What is the difference between Treason, Heresy, Blasphemy and Witchcraft

A

Treason - Betraying the monarch or country
Punishment = Execution, hanging, drawing , HDQ for men

Heresy - Religious beliefs that went against the church
Punishment - Often burnt at the stake

Blasphemy - Speaking offensively about God or sacred things
Punishment - Fines, public humiliation, sometimes imprisonment

What was the progression of the location of transportation

A
  • America until 1776
  • Temporarily Hulks
  • Australia, convicts were given too much freedom, so were kept separated from colonists in specially built barracks, or sent to work on distant isolated farms.

Why transportation to Australia came to an end

A
  • Too expensive compared to building prisons
  • Pentonville Prison , for example, challenged prisoner’s physically and mentally
  • Some people compared it to slavery
  • Some people in Britain objected to paying taxes to look after families of convicts whilst they were away
  • Increasing criticism of high wages and easy access of buying land for ex-convicts in Australia

What was a Ticket of Leave?

A
  • Given to well behaved convicts in Australia
  • Allowed them to work for wages and live freely before their sentence fully ended
  • Like an early parole

Describe smuggling and why it came to an end

A
  • Smuggling was very popular , viewed as a social crime so people didn’t necessarily look down upon it
    Tubsman - Carried the goods
    Batsman - Protected the tubsman
    Venturer - Investor/Funder
  • Government stopped smuggling by introducing the hovering act, cannot anchor within 6 miles of coastline and government also reduced duties to make smuggling unprofitable

- To end British rule in northern Ireland and unite Ireland as one independent country
- Nationalist Paramilitary group
- 70’S - 90’S Troubles, bombings, shootings, Birmingham Pub Bombings
- Good Friday Agreement - Agreed to disarm
- Known for Sinn Fein

Al-Qaeda
- Create a global Islamic caliphate and remove Western influence from Muslim countries
- Islamic extremist terrorist groups
- 9/11 attacks
- London 77 Bombings
- Osama Bin Laden
- Sparked War on terror
