General Map of the Nervous System Flashcards
(19 cards)
The central nervous system is comprised of what elements of the body?
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
- Optic Nerve (CN 2)
The peripheral nervous system is comprised of what elements of the body?
- 11 Cranial Nerves (not including CN 2)
- Spinal Nerves
- Sympathetic Ganglia
- Enteric Plexus
What is the difference in afferent and effect neurons?
- Afferent neurons bring signals IN
- Efferent neurons bring signals OUT (E = Exit)
When does the neural tube form and at what end does it initially form at?
- Forms at 21 days
- Forms in the cervical region initially’
What is the prosencephalon?
The forebrain
As the brain develops what is the prosencephalon broken up into?
- Telencephalon
- Diencephalon (CN 2 and optic disc form here)
What is the mesencephalon?
Midbrain
What is the rhombencephalon?
Hindbrain?
As the brain develops what is the rhombencephalon broken up into?
- Metencephalon (pons and cerebellum)
- Myelencephalon (medulla oblongata)
What are the 3 brain divisions and their components?
- Forebrain (Prosencephalon): Telencephalon and Diencephalon (CN 2 and optic disc form here)
- Midbrain (Mesencephalon)
- Hindbrain (Rhombencephalon): Metencephalon (pons and cerebellum) and Myelencephalon (medulla oblongata)
What does the transverse fissure separate?
The cerebellum and the occipital lobe
What does the longitudinal fissure separate?
The left and right brain
What does the lateral sulcus or fissure separate?
The temporal and frontal lobe
What are the terms used when discussing the orientation of the CNS?
- Dorsal (Superior)
- Ventral (Inferior)
- Rostral (Anterior)
- Caudal (Posterior)
What is the biggest difference between an MRI and a CT?
- On an MRI the fine soft tissue structures are visible and the grey and white matter can be differentiated
- On and CT the bones are white and the fine structures are not visible clearly
Is the frontal lobe in the rostral or caudal telencephalon?
Rostral
What is the central nervous systems primary function?
Control of motor, sensory and integrative functions
What is the peripheral nervous systems primary function?
Control of functional components
What is the difference between somatic and visceral nervous systems?
- Somatic is voluntary nervous systems
- Visceral is an autonomic nervous system
