Genes Flashcards
(8 cards)
What does a gene consist of?
A gene consists of a unique sequence of nucleotides that codes for a functional protein of an RNA molecule.
What does the protein, RNA, determine?
These proteins will determine a particular characteristic/trait (eg height, skin colour) or function (eg structural protein or enzyme).
Why is a gene considered ‘double-stranded’?
A gene is considered double stranded - template strand and coding strand of a gene.
What are homologous chromosome pairs?
Homologous pairs have the same band sequence (same genes in the same location, but different alleles/versions of the genes.
What are homologous chromosome pairs composed of?
Homologous pairs are composed of ONE paternal gene (inherited from dad) and SECOND maternal gene (inherited from mum).
What are the coding sections on genes?
Exons
What are the non-coding sections on genes?
Introns
Which is translated, exons or introns?
Exons
