Genetic Engineering Flashcards
(7 cards)
1
Q
What is genetic engineering ?
A
A process which involves modifying the genome of an organism by introducing a gene from another organism to give a desired effect
2
Q
Give a reason of why genetically engineering plants Is useful
A
- resistance to diseases
- bigger fruit
3
Q
Where have we genetically engineered bacteria?
A
To produce insulin in treating diabetes
4
Q
How does genetic engineering work?
A
Desired genes are cut out
And transferred to the cells of other organisms
5
Q
What are the pros of genetic engineering crops?
A
- increase yield
- make the nutrients for people in undeveloped countries
- already grown with no problems
6
Q
What are the cons of genetically modifying plants?
A
- may affect other plant species already alive, this affect the population of insects, reducing farm, and biodiversity
- not fully understood for the affects of human health
- transplanted genes may get out into the natural environment
7
Q
What are the stages of genetic engineering ?
A
- Enzymes isolate required gene
- Gene is inserted into a vector
- vector is used to insert the gene into the required cells
- genes are transferred into the organisms cells st an early stage so they develop with the desired characteristics
