Genetics🧬🧪 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Genetics
The field of biology that studies how characteristics are passed from parent to offspring
Alleles
The contrasting form of a gene there are at least two for every trait. These are representing with letters (AA,Aa,aa)
Dominant allele
The trade that shows up when it is present represented by the capital letter A
Recessive allele
The trait that shows up only when the dominant alleles is not present, represented by the lowercase letter (a)
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism, the combination of all alleles written i letter form(TT,Tt,tt)
Phenotype
The PHYSICAL appearance of an organism (yellow, green, tall)
Homozygous
The condition in which both alleles are the same, also called pure breed(AA,aa)
Heterozygous
The condition in which that alleles are different, also called hybrid(Tt)
Test cross
Procedure in which an individual with an unknown genotype is crossed with an individual that is recessive to determine the genotype of the unknown
Incomplete dominance
A type of genetic pattern in which one allele is not completely dominant over the other that results in blending of physical traits example :white mixed with black makes gray
Codominance
A genetic pattern where both alleles are expressed and contribute to the phenotype both traits are physically visible together, black and white mixed results in spotted speckled or striped black-and-white appearance
Multiple-alleles
A genetic pattern in which there are more than 2 alleles for a particular trait
Sex-linked traits
A genetic pattern in which genes are found on the X or Y chromosome (often referred to sex-linked traits when found on the X chromosome)
Polygenetic traits
A genetic pattern in which the trait is controlled
Blood type
A human example of a multiple allele, codominant trait
Heredity
The passing on a characteristics as the (color of the eyes or hair) from parents to offspring
Punnet square
Is square diagram that is made of a grid of usually four boxes and is used to calculate all the combinations and frequencies of the different genotypes and phenotypes among the offspring
