Genetics Flashcards
memorize and revise. (20 cards)
What are genetics?
study of heredity
What is heredity?
passing of traits from parents to the offspring
early form of genetics are from?
Domestication of dogs
Who was gregor mendel?
An austrian monk
What did mendel study?
Genetics of peas
Why did mendel study peas?(3 reasons)
-the structure of a pea flower
-presence of distinctive traits
-rapid reproductive cycle
what are traits?
traits are the characteristics that are passed from parents to offspring
why did Mendel alter some plants?
so he could do some of the fertilization by hand
how did Mendel start the experiment
he crossed 2 different purebred plants
What did Mendel call the first generation?
F1 generation
What color were the F1 generation? (Filial seeds)
Yellow!
What is the 2nd generation called?
F2 generation
What was the process of the plants fertilization?
Mendel allowed the F1 generation to self fertilize and produced the 2nd generation.
What are genes?
genes are sections of a chromosome that code for a trait
what is a dominant allele?
Form of a gene that is fully expressed when 2 different alleles are present.
whats a recessive allele?
form of a gene that is not expressed when paired with a dominant allele.
Genotype is?
Genetic makeup of an organism (Ex: RR,Rr,rr)
A test cross is for?
To tell if a dominant allele is a homozygous or a heterozygous
If an organism is a heterozygous…
half the offspring will be RECESSIVE
if the organism is a homozygous then..
half of the offspring will be DOMINANT
