Genetics 7 Flashcards
(14 cards)
independent assortment
genes on different chromosomes line up independently from one another; 2n
linkage
genes are located on the same chromosome; these genes will segregate but are not independent from each other
as the distance between two genes increases,
so does the probability that they will crossover with the other sister chromatids
in order for chrossing over to occur, the genes muxt be
incompletely linked
best way to examine linked genes
use parent of interest crossed to a double homozygous recessive(test cross)
what ratio is expected with a test cross
1:1:1:1
how are linked genes written
all genes for one chromosome aer written together over the genes for its homologue eg: MD/md vs Mm Dd (ind assortment)
what to do if you don’t know the genotype of heterozygote parent
take the parental type chromosome from the two most numerous offspring
distance between genes
total # of recombinants/total # of offspring X 100 = % recombnination (1% recomb = 1 map unit)
what ratio do linked genes produce
unequal
if % recombination is over 50
assume independent assortment
3 point linkage
examine 3 linked genes; determine map distance using only 1 cross (or 3, 1 is easier) by setting up a chart. Indicate in chart P for parental type and R(#) for recombinant
genotype for offspring
entire chromosome of parent of interest over entire chromosome given by test cross parent
gene order
write genotype in gene order, make sure middle gene on map is middle when writing.
