geo human f/w Flashcards
(23 cards)
what are some advantages to using certain xyz as a data presentation?
- many categories shown
- easy to analyse
- easy to quote data
- easy to see subaerial view
what are some disadvantages to using certain data presentation techniques?
- not all data may be accounted for
- variables too vague
- no sense of scale
- colour too similar
what are some graphical data presentation techniques?
-isoline
-radar
-line
bar
what is to using questionnaire data?
Qualitative
-word cloud
Collects a range of data and allows patterns to form
direct
Largely perspective based so it may not be reliable.
No sense of scale
what is to using EQS
Qualitative
Radar graph
Clear and easy to interpret, locations can be placed on one piece of data
Symbols may overlap.
what is to using land use survey
Qualitative/ quantitative
The colour coded map
Shows the trend in land use from point A to point B
The distribution is easy to see. Visual prompt on the land use and agglomeration .
Stuck with the buildings with multiple stories
Colours could overlap, no real sense of scale.
May end up simplifying data .
what is to using noise
Quantitative
Line graph
Accurate and reliable data
Doesn’t account for region
what is to using traffic count
Quantitative Bar graph Accurate and reliable data , Easy to see the general trend. Easy to construct Different time periods may show different data Doesn’t give details about location
what is to using pedestrian count
Quantitative Bar graph Accurate and reliable data , Easy to see the general trend. Easy to construct Different time periods may show different data Doesn’t give details about location
what is the eqs method
Look around the location and score the location on a scale of 1-5 for the amount of litter, vegetation, air pollution, amenities and building maintenance. The higher the score the better the area.
why is eqs valid
This is valid as it records the quality of life (which is also a non-numerical value) and could also add to the numerical value of sickness in the area which would negatively affect the quality of life.
what is the land survey method
Walk along a street at the allocated site and look at the ground floor land uses.
Identify the top 3 dominant land uses and classify them into the RICEPOTS categories (Residential, Industrial, Commercial, Entertainment, Public building, Open Space,
why is the land survey valid?
This data is valid because it will record information on services and facilities at each site. If a site has lots of green space this might be good for health because there will be room to exercise and a better air quality. If there is an industrial area, this might be good for employment but it might cause problems with pollution and traffic congestion which would negatively affect quality of life.
what is the noise survey method
Using the “sound meter” app, read the peak value for noise registered on your phone screen over a 30 second period.
why is the noise survey valid?
This is valid as it determines the quality of life through annoyance. If there is a loud noise ongoing or frequent, it would decrease the quality of life.
what is the traffic count method
Stand at an agreed point. Using a stopwatch, time 2 minutes and count the number of cars and people who walk past you in both directions.
why is the traffic count valid
This is valid as it determines the quality of life through visual and sound pollution as well as air. The more cars there are, the lower the quality of life is.
what is the epitome word method
Walk around the area, write down one word which sums up the location.
why is the epitome word valid
Valid however needs to only be one person or else the perspective may be confused.
what is the photo method
Take a photo of the site to accurately portray the location.
why is the photo method valid
Valid however needs to only be one person observing or else the perspective may be confused and also things cn be left out of images
what is the questionnaire method ?
Use opportunistic sampling to select participants to answer a short questionnaire.
why is the questionnaire vali?
questionnaires are a useful way to research people’s perceptions or values and attitudes. By asking a mixture of open and closed questions you can collect a lot of data quite quickly.
