Geog wa1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
State what a river refers to.
Rivers are natural wide flows of freshwater across the land that contains water temporarily before the water flows to another waterbody.Rivers also flow from places of high elevation to low elevation as gravity pulls the water downwards.
State what an ocean refers to.
Oceans are large masses of water that are connected to one another.
State what glaciers refer to.
AND / HOW
How they are formed.
Glaciers are large masses of ice that rest on land or float in the sea. They are found in places where it snows throughout the year and when enough snow accumulates ,it hardens into ice.
State what soil refers to.
Soil refers to the loose topmost layer of earth’s surface where plants grow.
State how soil moisture is formed.
when it rains ,water passes through the soil through very small openings known as pores , what that is stored in the soil is known as soil moisture.
State what a lake refers to.
Lakes are water bodies surrounded by land.
State how groundwater forms.
Groundwater form when a part of this water makes it way to the rocks beneath , filling up cracks and pores of the rocks.
State what freshwater stores refer to.
Freshwater stores are places where water with low amounts of salt are found. Thus it can be used readily.
State what saltwater stores refer to.
Saltwater stores are places where water with too much high levels of salt are found. Thus it cannot be used readily.
State what condensation is
Condensation is when water vapour loses heat to the cooler sky as it rises and condenses into water droplets.(Water droplets will merge to form bigger water droplets, eventually forming clouds.)-forming clouds X
State what evaporation and transpiration is
Evaporation is when the sun’s heat causes water to gain heat and evaporate causing the water to change to water vapour.Transpiration is when water vapour is released from plants.
State what precipitation is
Precipitation is when water falls as rain or snow if the air is cold enough.
State what infiltration is
Infiltration is when water enters the ground or soil.
State what percolation is
Percolation is when water flows downwards through the soil into the groundwater due to gravity.
State what groundwater is
Groundwater is when water that seeps into the ground may be absorbed by plants or stored as groundwater.
State what surface runoff is
Surface runoff is when water flows from highland and over the ground surface into rivers and streams.
