Geographic Literacy - Unit #1 Flashcards
(32 cards)
These imaginary lines run North to South and measure how far East or West a location is of the Prime Meridian.
Longitude
How far apart are the parallel latitude lines from one another?
They are about 69 miles apart.
0 degrees longitude, the prime meridian runs through which city?
Greenwich, England
These lines run east to west
Latitude! Lats lie flat!
0 degrees longitude is also known as …..
The Prime Meridian
A map with Big Detail of a smaller area is what type of scale?
Big Scale.
A map of a larger area which contains very little detail is known as a ??? scale map.
Small Scale map.
A name we give to all of those who make maps is….
A Cartographer.
Map Projections
Different ways of drawing 2 dimensional representations of Planet Earth. ie: Mercator or Winkel Tripel projections
A Map
A representation of the Earth on a flat surface.
What can be found on a map? p.21 in textbook
Most maps contain: a title, legend, scale, date of Publication, Direction, Borders.
Winkel Tripel Projection
A map projection that is the best balance of all distortions; size, shape, and direction.
Mercator Projection:
A map projection that shows accurate compass bearing points, but greatly distorts the size of landmasses near the poles, and near the equator too!
Thematic Maps
Are maps that contain specific information about a place which is useful. This type of map communicates information about the countries on it. Perhaps average age, income our cultural information about the countries.
Topographic maps are maps which……
show elevation of places relative to sea level.
General Purpose Maps:
Are maps which are used to show bodies of water, countries, roads, cities, or elevations. These types of maps often show political boundaries.
What do you call the pointy flower-like figure on maps which designates the cardinal directions?
Compass Rose
This ordered system of letters and numbers help us to find locations on maps.
Alpha-Numeric Grid location.
There are 24 of these around planet Earth, 1 for every 15 degrees of the planet’s rotation.
Time Zones.
Who had the bright idea of creating Standard Time Zones.
Sir Sanford Fleming.
A system which uses at least 3 satellites, and satellite signals to determine the locations of things and places on the surface of the Earth.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
What is the place 180 degrees away from the Prime Meridian?
The International Dateline.
The mathematical relationship between a place on Earth, and its reproduction on a map.
Scale.
The fraction or ratio which compares the actual size of a place on Earth to its reproduction on a map.
Representative Fraction. ie: 1:50,000 or 1/50,000
