geography coasts Flashcards
(10 cards)
coast
where the land meats the sea
hydraulic action
the power of the waves as they smash into the cliff. trapped air is forced in the holes and cracks in the rock, causing them to break apart
attrition
materials carried by the sea knock against one another causing them to become smaller and smoother
abrasion
the waring away of cliffs or rocky platforms by rocks scraping along them
wave cut platform
a rocky, level shelf at or around sea level representing the base of old, retreated cliffs
deposition
when the waves lose energy it drops or deposits its material. the deposited material is called sediment
beach
a zone of deposited material e.g. sand or pebbles
transportation
the sea carries away the eroded material
longshore drift
the transportation of sediment along a stretch of coastline caused by waves approaching the beach at an angle
spit
a depositional landform when a finger of sediment extend from the shore out to sea
