Geography of Fertility Flashcards
(18 cards)
Define fertility
The number of live births achieved by a women/ man or population.
Define fecundity
The physiological capability to produce a live birth.
What are the two major approaches to measuring fertility. Describe the differences.
Cohort= The number of children born to a cohort of women over there reproductive lifetime. Period= number of children born within a specific time period.
Give a retrospective measure of fertility.
Completed fertility= average number of children over a womens reproductive lifetime.
Give a prospective measure of fertility.
Parity progression ratio= proportion of women who will go on to have at least one more child.
Match the definition to the method:
Number of live births among population of a given area in e.g. one year
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
- Period measure.
Match the definition to the method:
Births per women of reproductive age in area per year
General Fertility Rate (GFR)
- Period measure.
Match the definition to the method:
Birth to women aged x/ total women aged x
Age specific Fertility Rate (ASFR)
- Period measure.
Match the definition to the method:
Average number of children over a womens reproductive lifetime.
Completed fertility
- Cohort measure.
Match the definition to the method:
Proportion of women who will go on to have at least one more child that e.g. year.
Parity Progression ratio
-Cohort measure
Define Crude Birth Rate.
Number of live births among population of a given area in e.g. one year
Define General Fertility Rate
Births per women of reproductive age in area per year
Define Age specific fertility rate
Birth to women aged x/ total women aged x
Define Completed fertility.
Average number of children over a womens reproductive lifetime.
Define parity progression ratio.
Proportion of women who will go on to have at least one more child that e.g. year.
Define Total Fertility Rate
The number of children who would be born per women if she passes through child bearing years according to the current rate.
- Period measure used to construct a synthetic cohort.
Give some of the spacial patterns of fertility.
Starting behaviour
Stopping behaviour
Spacing behaviour
Match the definition to the method:
The number of children who would be born per women if she passes through child bearing years according to the current rate.
Total Fertility Rate
- Mixed: period group used to construct a synthetic cohort.
